Advanced Japanese Joinery - Kanawa and Shachi

About the Workshop

This workshop focuses on two iconic, and critical Japanese joints. Students will learn to layout and cut the kanawa tsugi (interlocking, wedged scarf joint) and the shachi sen tsugi (key wedged tenon joint) using both traditional hand tools and power tools. Precision, control, and understanding of order are emphasized. This is ideal for those already confident in basic timber framing and seeking advanced-level joinery.

  • Layout of Shachi Tsugi mortise and tenon

  • Hand cutting of advanced joinery

  • Use of power tools for fast joinery cutting

Included with Tuition

Meals Included - This workshop includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on each day with the exception of the last day, where only breakfast and lunch are served. Meals are typically brought in or cooked family style.

Prerequisites

To gain the maximum value from this workshop, it is recommend you have timber framing or Japanese woodworking experience. Please inquire if you are a beginner so we can plan accordingly. Consider taking one of our Japanese Woodworking Bootcamps prior to this course.

Required Tools

The following tools are required to get the most out of your experience. A loner may be available but not guaranteed. Bringing incorrect, poor quality, or damaged tools will limit your ability to participate in the class. Please contact us for assistance in purchasing tools prior the the workshop.

  • 500mm Sashigane

  • Japanese chisels 15, 18, or 24mm (tataki prefered)

  • Japanese hammer

  • Ryoba saw (240-270mm)

  • Small Japanese Kanna or bloack plane (30-54mm)

  • Marking pen

  • Your personal sharpening gear

Optional Tools

  • Small router with 1/4” bit

  • Quality circular saw with fine tooth blade (JDM circular saw preferred)

  • Saw guide

  • Drill with 14mm and 24mm quality auger bit (Star-M or Wood owl)
