Jon Billing: Hands-On Planing the most Challenging Woods

  • Never Stop Building LLC 772 Rome Road Mercer, ME, 04957 United States (map)

Work with Jon Billing to Plane Difficult Woods

Jon will focus on sharing his approach to everyday planning where one may encounter difficult wood with reversing grain, figure, or knots, with the goal being to achieve a smooth tearout-free surface. Kanna are complex tools and getting clean finishes with them can be a challenge, especially when dealing with difficult grain, but with a few adjustments of the kanna, most woods can be planed smooth and tearout-free relatively easily. We will discuss the tool adjustment and setup areas that to focus on most when facing planing issues, and also talk about the importance of the overall shop space such as the planing beam, good light, etc.
