Crafting Wood with Japanese Techniques

Tokonoma Tea Room

Part of a suite of coordinating designs completed as part of the Kyoto on the Mississippi project.

A multi use space reminiscent of the traditional Japanese receiving room. The tokonoma alcove features a dovetailed tea cabinet and yaki-sugi tokobashira. The raised floor is covered with tatami mat and hand planned port orford cedar boards. With the addition of fusuma doors, the room doubles as a private guest room. Horizontal and vertical staves diffuse the natural light from above.
